Re: Hues on First
Personally, I think that when I first loaded the redesign a couple of days ago, I thought, nice, clean, sharp, then I said….holy crap, the background’s changing colors. I can’t say that the finishing pink would have been my first choice, but that very subtle fade was just perfectly timed so that you weren’t at first sure it was changing, then you were, then you thought…what the heck just happened.
I don’t know what the final decision should be, and to be honest, with the header photo changing with each post, you may be right in going with the gray, but that slow fade…if you could incorporate that somehow. Wow.
What might be cool would be for you to build a set of five or six fades (personally, I vote color to color, although gray could live at one end of that) then YOU pick which one looks best with the image and then that’s what we get while that’s the topmost post. Of course, I have no idea how much more laborious that makes your updating, but the way you’re doing the header image probably already takes a bit of effort.
Still, freakishly sweet design.
Re: Hues on First
Craigley, glad you picked up on that. I spent a long time building the site to use PNGs just so that I could that subtle “is it happening or not” fade… only to kill it after launch due to doubt about the intensity of the colors.
There was a cafe I used to go to in Portland, Oregon (I think… I have a very very bad memory for specific chronology and location… most of my memory is pictures out of time and place, I swear) where there were two “trick” tables that appeared normal but were actually set on mechanisms that caused one to slowly sink down towards the floor and then up again, and the other to slowly spin around. The movement was so slow that you never perceived it directly, but half an hour later the table was up at your chin and you had no idea how it had happened. Lovely idea.
There was also a creepy mannequin in a bathtub in the bathroom, but that’s another thing entirely.
I was also considering the time honored design approach of sampling a color from the main image and having the site reflect that. I don’t want to burn people out on the colors, but I may play with both these things for a while based on the feedback here…
Re: Hues on First
I like 1, 2, or 3.
Long time kGTD user, thanks for your work.
Re: Hues on First
1,2 or 3 - not because i love pink colors, but just because 4,5,6 are way to bright for white foreground/text. in combination with darker text, no.5 would be my favorite.
Re: Hues on First
I like the grey the best. 2 and 3 look really good, but don’t quite match the lolipop picture you currently have on top. Grey goes with everything.
Re: Hues on First
Honestly I like the grey best. With all the other colors they’re the first thing you look at when the page loads. With the grey, the actual page content is the first thing you look at.
Re: Hues on First
Ethan, I think I agree with the match-color-to-picture thing. Not sure how you’re doing the article images, but if it’s not random (It doesn’t appear to be just from the background-image: url) you should be in pretty good shape. I agree that you should keep the fade, and I think that you should leave the ability for the user to play with the colors. Simple small color boxes will work.
Very nice redesign, by the way. Your site is one of the few Drupal sites that doesn’t scream “I’m a Drupal site!”
Re: Hues on First
There is a color match to the current lede article, but not yet on a per article basis. I’ll code that up later. You’re correct, they aren’t random (they are part of the article content type). As for drupal, i love it but you’re right, most drupal sites just look so drupal. much effort expended removing and cleaning up stuff to make it more visually streamlined.
Re: Hues on First
I really like the #5 color
Re: Hues on First
Yeah, like that. Wowee. I clicked in this evening pretty much knowing there’d be no new “article” content but just curious to see what the background did. Nice bright red, matched the picture, but dang it you weren’t doing the fade…oh well, I can’t always get what I want. But crap if I wasn’t halfway through the comments when I realized you’d gotten me again. Very nice.
Re: Hues on First
I like 4 and 6 when they fade in. But after fading, “4” is too colorful and bright and 6 is too dark for my taste :)

yes!!!!!!! that’s it. Oh man. My poor memory. But what great memories. I’ll have to find out if it’s still around.
Re: Hues on First
Just found the site from Merlin Man’s link. Just wanted to mention, that it certainly is still around. Great place!
Re: Hues on First
Ok after reading though this article, I’m totally freakin! I just messed with the different hues, and the whole fade into a colored background is friggin awesome. What’s more, I truly thought my vision was going. I new this page loaded with a red theme and after reading through the comments, the next thing I know, I’m looking at a grey page. Once again, FRIGGIN AWESOME! What’s your secret?
Sorry, I’m a newb when it comes to web development, as you can tell. I found out how you do your site color fade, I still think it’s sweet.
Re: Hues on First
Glad you like it and appreciate feedback on whether it’s too much or too little. I had some crazy color fades going on for a while, but toned it down to the fade to gray that I have now.

“I will definitely be expanding on this answer in a full article, but essentially: Yojimbo is my “moleskine” and DEVONThink pro is my “Research Notebook”. More on that later!”
Another request for oneoto kiralama araç kiralama araba kiralama rent a car of your great screencasts on how you use Yojimbo and DEVONThink Pro. I have been playing around with both but I’m not sure how to use them effectively. Yojimbo is great but it doesn’t support nested folders. DEVONThink looks very powerful but does not support tags (from what I gather). I would love to see how you use them Ethan.
