I feel a bit like I’ve been holding my breath for a couple months and can now… exhale. The next logical step in Omni based task management now has an official moniker: OmniFocus.
Whence OmniFocus? As mentioned previously on ye olde omni mouth, the talented folks at Omni junketed me out to Seattle earlier this year for a little “OmniSummit” with their big brains and the crazy-genius of Merlin Mann. Before more on that, some background:
From the beginning of kGTD I considered what a pure-Cocoa Kinkless app would look like. Anyone that has used kGTD in its present form has probably had the same thought about a minute after realizing that Applescript is cool and amazing but has some limitations in achieving the buttery smoothness we all crave in a gtd-esque app. These musings were jotted down into a file I called K2… assuming that kGTD ever got to 1.0 (scheduled to be the same time Flickr is out of ‘gamma’), k2 was my ideal cocoa version of the system. But here’s the thing… OmniOutliner seems so close to what’s needed. If it wasn’t I wouldn’t have been able to tape on the bits of Applescript that make it into whatever kGTD is.
OmniGroup has been very supportive of kGTD from the beginning, clearly making code tweaks and additions to support this nutty venture. At some point it became clear that the next logical step would be to consider Cocoafying the whole shebang. Having the chance to take everything I’d been thinking and working on with kGTD and see it turned into something bigger and better and brighter is like making a doodle on a piece of paper, handing it to da Vinci and seeing it turned into a full color oil painting. Even better: it’s like Da Vinci letting you sit around and gab at them while they do this and ask for “a bit more cobalt-blue in the sky” and “a few more peasants in that bit on the left”.
So back to the Summit: Firstly, OmniGroup is collectively as cool and smart and fun as you’d imagine. Not only are the top notch coders, I found that they have some super skilled in-house UI talent and are all generally big-thinkers. After three days of chats and meetings and white-boarding and photoshopping and debating and joking with Omni and Merlin, there emerged a very clear vision of not just my ideal task-app, but something even greater. I thought I had some clever ideas to brain dump on them, and brain-dump I did. But some of the cleverest things were straight-outta-omni… things that may or may not make it into version 1, but which guarantee that OmniFocus is an app with legs and which you can bet your productivity on now and into the future. And keep in mind that the ineluctable Merlin Mann, godfather of most of us that are being at all productive on the Mac, has some sort of knowledge in his genes about what makes us truly and effectively productive… the insights gleaned from his words of wisdom are another big plus for this new application.
I guess I’m still holding my breath because I’m not going to say much more on details. At the end of the day, after flying in and brain-dumping and watching the progress meter tick upwards as the Omni folks code away, they are the ones that deserve a round of applause and support from those of us that have benefitted and will benefit from their efforts.

Ethan, your contributions
Ethan, your contributions are awesome, and OmniFocus’ direction wouldn’t be the same without your input (or without Kinkless as a starting point). We’re very fortunate that you and Merlin were able to find some time in your schedules to share some of your wisdom and collaborate with us, and I hope that what we build will be true to our collective vision.
(While I’m sure we won’t get everything perfect in version 1.0, we hope to take some good steps in the right direction!)
It raises a great excitement
It raises a great excitement and trepidation … but the obvious question is … WHEN - even a beta?
Shall there be ‘import
Shall there be ‘import from kgtd’ functionality in the new app?
And yes, a very remote release date might be fun as well (month, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, underline correct answer)
Yeah, we’ll definitely
Yeah, we’ll definitely need some sort of import from kGTD.
I’m not sure if it makes sense to have OmniFocus directly open OmniOutliner files that are in the kGTD style; rather, I think it might make the most sense to have an AppleScript that understands kGTD and can create a parallel structure in OmniFocus.
Thanks Ethan, Does this
Thanks Ethan,
Does this mean from today, that kGTD has been put in the fridge, and all ideas are projected now to OmniFocus? It’s great to see Omni is shaking up the Mac users again with a great app (although we’ve seen nothing yet, we can only imagine.). We’ll be proud Mac users as ever, and can say MUAGMD (Mac users are Getting More Done ;-)
Thanks for all your time and effort you have put in developing kGTD, this community loves you!
It’s all good news.
It’s all good news.
Kinkless is frankly stable enough now to run a train through it (I just did over the past few months)
The notion that there is even more coming and it will be smoother and cocoa-y is just great.
Great work, the original vision was yours but you couldn’t be handing it over to better hands….
This is good news, and I
This is good news, and I can’t wait too see what Merlin, Ethan and the Omni crew can make together. Sign me up for the beta!
Excellent official news! And
Excellent official news! And congrats to Ethan, for making this all possible …
May I assume Ethan will remember us KGTD people when looking for beta testers? Alpha testers? Or even just a pool of ideas?
This is great news. And I
This is great news.
And I think this is a much better use of you than coding more Applescript. You seem to have a real genius for cutting thru to a simple elegant representation of a process. For example, I plan in projects but I act in contexts handles about a third of the GTD book in a sentence. And kGTD’s minimal parsers for setting recurring events, etc are economical and, again, elegant, so much so that they are completely taken for granted.
And like Liz, I’d be interested in any kind of support I can offer to this new development.
Looking forward to the new
Looking forward to the new app. Sign me up for beta!
Dont forget to put some sort of gateway in there so we can send ourselves tasks from blackberries or our email client for later classification during daily reviews!
Great news. We’ll stay in
Great news. We’ll stay in touch.
You would think that Omni
You would think that Omni would start a new poll about what we want in the App. All i can say it this, their last Poject planner was a let down to most, not in the app , but the creativity of the app, I am really hoping on this one. One thing I want because it Rocks is a moving maker of some type letting me know what my progress is , If i have to slide something over to show myself what I have done, than that will piss me off. Remember Leopard is going to let you do some great things.
Exiting news!
Exiting news! Omni+Ethan+Merlin! What better team can one imagine to craft the ulimate GTD-app. And the whole thing will ride on Leopard. No wonder our expectations are high… ganesh
As someone fairly new to the
As someone fairly new to the Mac/GTD/kGTD/OOP and Omni’s other software this only makes me happpier I switched. Thanks for your work to date Ethan and bring on the new. I have to disagreee about OmniPlan, it’s easily the most attractive and pleasant to use project planning software i’ve used. With it, OOP and kGTD as a guide OmniFocus sign me up for the Beta as well!
Sounds great. The right
Sounds great. The right people. Sign me up for testing if desired.
For reference, there’s a Mac GTD app called Inbox under development here: http://www.midnightbeep.com
I’ve looked at it, but haven’t used it.

I was just sitting with my omnioutliner, trying to set up my own 43 folders, and thinking: “I WANT TABS.”
I’m thrilled to have found kGTD. Just upgraded to OmniOutlinerPro and am getting set up. The Utility Bar now works like tabs. Love it.
But it’d be wonderful if I could choose to organize my projects and actions by tabs across the top. So for example, once I select projects (or actions) rather than have the specific projects (or actions) spread vertically down the page, I would have a horizontal row of project tabs across the top. Sort of like iTunes 7 options for the iPod: select iPod on the left, and then you have iPod-centric options in tabs across the top.
How cool would it be if OmniFocus did that?! (Please?)
Absolutely exciting! Please
Absolutely exciting! Please sign me up for beta testing. Oh - and please DO include a “Next Actions” section/summary/view for us who miss this feature in the latest kGTD release ;-) Cheers, Christian
Just to let you know that
Just to let you know that http://www.thinkingrock.com.au/ is fully matured (v1.2.3 has just been released) and many users find that the process flow is very intuitive and helps them to follow the GTD method. By the way, it is free.
