First, as everyone says, this program rocks. I am very grateful.
I am having a problem with syncing to ical. I have set it up so I syn all my separate Actions to ical. It creates separate calendars for each, but then I get lots of repeats. It also seems to be missing a lot of the actions, especially ones that are due today.
Thanks.

So is this just a big in the program? Can anyone else get the sync to ical feature to work? Thanks.

I'm having the same problems
I’m having the same problems with the repititions (and other problems with synching). I didn’t see this post before, and started a new thread (sorry), subject called “synch problems - big time” - but it’s the new year weekend and everyone’s still recovering I guess ‘cause there’ve been no answers on the other thread either.
Cheers

I cannot get anything transferred to iCal
Guest, not sure how you set
Guest, not sure how you set it up to sync your separate actions, but I can guess on why you’re getting the duplicates.
Basically, every “task group” that you sync to iCal comes from either the actions section or the projects section.
In kGTD settings, iCal sync settings section, if you enter a line with a topic name being the name of the calendar you wish to create/sync with and then leave the context and project drop downs blank, kGTD will sync your next actions section (if that has been enabled in kGTD settings).
If you enter a calendar name and then choose a context from the drop down, but leave the project drop down blank, then the calendar will be populated from the Actions section context that matches your selection.
If, on the other hand, you leave the context drop down blank but choose a project, then all tasks for that project should be synchronized to iCal. There are some bugs here, though and I’ve noted cases where this doesn’t work fully.
Finally, selecting a context and a project will sync only those items from the chosen project that match your selected context as well.
If you create multiple calendars that have, potentially, the same task in different groups, then you could get duplicates. This is good and bad. For example, if you create one calendar for a context and another for a project, then any tasks that are in that project but which are also in the context will be syncrhonized twice. They won’t come back into kGTD as duplicates, however (the duplication is one way).
I currently allow these duplicates as I envision cases where you might sync, for example, all tasks for specific project to a calendar dedicated to that project, while you might sync all errands or other context tasks to a different calendar. You can then selectively view these calendars as necessary to filter your tasks view.
Karen / Peggie, I’ll follow up on your issues separately (Karen, in the other thread and Peggie, over email).
reuild bug?
Hi,
I really love this program; thanks very much to Ethan.
Since I adopted the new version 0.75.2 I got frustrating results by running the “Rebuid” script: it silently re-add all the entries in the iCal ToDo list. The final effect is that any item in that list is repeated as many times as I run “Rebuild”.
The “Sync” script works just fine.
Am I missing something, or this is a bug?
Thanks,
Alessandro

So yes, now I understand how things sync. I was unaware that you needed to enter a context or project in the settings.
But here’s what I want to do:
I want when I sync for it to create a list in ical of all the events I have due that day, no matter the context or project. Is there an easy way to do that?
Thanks.
rebuild script turned iCal spastic
Should have resisted the urge to use beta but the kGTD concept so cool that I plunged in anyway. I had been able to synch tween kGTD and iCal without problem until I accidentally clicked the Rebuild script (at least that’s my hindsight deduction). kGTD ground away for quite a while (moving all kinds of stuff from the sample project over to iCal) and iCal hasn’t been the same since. I’ve deleted iCal prefs and it makes no difference.
Symptom: To-Dos don’t show in iCal. If you click to expand the To Do pane, the pane opens but just displays last bit of calendar grid (as if the cache is frozen).
I’m just stuck with iCal being extremely slow to open, almost to where it seems frozen). Selecting the About iCal menu item freezes everything. I have backups of the iCal data but can’t figure out how to shake iCal out of its kGTD-induced funk.
Any ideas anyone?
iCals calendars are stored
iCals calendars are stored in ~/Library/Calendars.
Could be you’ve got a corrupt one. Try zapping the calendars and relauch ical.

to-do's don't show up - iCal slow
I was having the same issues - the To-Dos would not show up, instead getting the calendar grid in the To-Dos panel, and iCal being slow to the point of unusability.
I deleted all calendars, sync folders, and .plist files associated with iCal, then added each kGTD context one at a time until I found what broke it.
It turned out to be my “web” context, so I broke that down further, adding one action to the context at a time. iCal got cranky when it had to deal with To-Dos that consisted of HTML links. I moved the HTML to the “notes” level of the action, and iCal is (so far) happy. The To-Dos show up, and iCal’s speed is back to normal.
Detail:
iCal breaks: (action) www.kinkless.com (context)@web
iCal works: (action) read kinkless (context)@web
(note) www.kinkless.com
I hope that helps and I’d be happy to try to clarify if needed.
IN Response to Merridew
Merridew,
YOU are a God Send.. I think you may be right. I have alot of urls as tasks… but other than that ICAl and kgtd has actually been working for you?

Dwayne,
Everything’s been chugging along smoothly so far… (cross fingers!)
I’m a little disappointed in this solution in that I have to switch programs in order to get the url, which breaks the whole ‘do in iCal’ concept. The awesomeness of the rest of kGTD more than makes up for it, though.
Perhaps someone more code-savvy than me could figure out what about the url breaks iCal, or figure out a way to have the ‘notes’ section show up in the ‘info’ pane in iCal…
I had the same experience.
Merridew, thanks for sharing your troubleshooting experience. I was having similar slowdowns in iCal and had tried all sorts of things— restore from calendar backup, replace local data with .Mac, etc. Deleting the single task which consisted of a URL made the problem go away.

Further weirdnesses/clues from KGTD-iCal script damage
Hey Jonny C,
Don’t know if it’s significant but ~/Library/Calendars is empty. Spotlight shows that the calendars are in ~/Library/Application Support/SyncService/LastSync Data. What’s also interesting is that the “KGTD 0.75 with Dates” calendar (which I can see listed in iCal’s calendars sidebar) isn’t in that folder. That document is over in ~/Documents/. iCal doesn’t respond when I right-click the “KGTD 0.75 with Dates” calendar and select Delete. Also none of the KGTD To-Do’s actually show up in iCal’s To-Do’s pane.
Another clue from Spotlight: Its listing of “Event & To Do’s” has 488 items—everyone of which came out of the KGTD Omni doc. That’s the result, I think, of the dump that happened when I clicked the wrong KGTD script button. Spotlight doesn’t tell me where they are, but I’d guess they’re part of the problem. When I double-click one, it takes me to the iCal calendar detail pane. But, again, I can’t delete them.
Any help, greatly appreciated. I’m back to paper lists when I was trying to leave ‘em behind. :-(

Waywest,
Try quitting iCal, dragging the folder ~/Library/Syncservices out onto the desktop and restarting iCal.
You might try rebuilding your permissions too..
let us know what happens..

Figured it out
So the reason it was not syncing correctly to ical was because I had customized the date format. Once I returned it to the original, it worked fine.
But I would still prefer to read the date in the format Tues, Dec. 12 rather than the European format.
Thanks.
Hi all, My To Do's show up,
Hi all,
My To Do’s show up, but I’m having the same problem of duplicated entries in iCal when I rebuild in kGTD.
Tried everything mentioned here: reset dates to Standard, Syncservices, Preferences. No dice… Anyother suggestions?
(As a temp workaround, If I need to rebuild kGTD again, I delete all the items in iCal’s To Do list, then Rebuild , iCal’s To Do list is re-poputlated.)
thanks…
wow, you're all amazing iCal users!
I have just been playing with this one day, and I have not dared to change any settings yet. I may try tinkering; at the moment the only context it’s syncing to iCal is “Errands”, and I would like it to sync everything. Can I tell it to Sync to more than one calendar?
My real question though is I suspect an iCal/Palm issue, not a kGTD issue. I want it to Sync all of my to-dos into DIFFERENT categories in the Palm Pilot “To Do” lists; so my “Errands” calendar To-Dos would go into the “Errands” category on the Palm, and the “Home” calendar To-Do’s would go into the “Home” category on Palm, etc. But instead it obstinately syncs all of my To-Dos from iCal into “Unfiled” on my Palm.
I was prepared for it to do that going the other way - anything I create on the Palm winds up “unfiled” in iCal. But is there a way to make iCal sync the ToDos into categories on the Palm that match the Calendar names in iCal? Or is this a foolish pipe dream?

Weird sync w iCal behavior
I’ve started using multiple kGTD files, all copies of the “KGTD 0.75 Dates & Time - Sorted” file, from the latest 0.75.2 release, and I’m getting odd sync behavior, and I’m not sure what the cause might be.
Previously, I had a huge file, with more than 50 projects, all with 2-20 sub-projects each, which took quite some time to sync. At first I didn’t quite understand how the iCal sync was supposed to work, but now that I have a slightly better understanding, I can’t tell if I can actually sync multiple files with iCal, or not. Main question being, will each file replace the contents of the selected calendar, or is it possible to have multiple files all synchronize tasks to one calendar, so that they all show up in one place?
Now it’s time for sleeping, but I’ll stop back tomorrow to see what else I can figure out about getting a few tasks listed in iCal, to keep tabs on the next steps in all of the cat herding with various lists of projects.
ical kgtd sync on the blink
hey waywest,
did you ever find a solution to this odd iCal behavior? i’m getting the same thing, where my todo’s don’t show up with that odd calendar grid, and everything get’s sluggish.
i’ve deleted all my prefs and started from scratch, also using a fresh kGTD file. iCal was working fine until i synced with kGTD and i was back to where i started?
hoping you or anyone else has found out where the bug is by now.
thanks…

Any luck since you last posted?
Dwayne
Here is the answer
you guys gotta also move ICAL to the trash.. log out and log BACK in .. and then move Ical from the trash to the applications folder.. doing this step last… after doing all the other tips made my ical work again…
Tried all the fixes - still no To Dos added to iCal on Sync
DOH!!
I’ve removed my previous post…. Due to User Error I was not getting anything over in iCal. I now understand that unless I set a context from the pull down menue on each action it will not be put in the iCal on sync.
Now it works fine.

Kevin
